This month, our spotlight shines on Larry and Sandi Rebecek. In Sandi's words:
About 5 years ago one of our church members, Bill Larrimer, stood up and shared that St. Philip’s United Methodist was adding a mission opportunity called BackPack Coalition and he was looking for volunteers. I (Sandi) attended the informational meeting and came home really excited. Larry was skeptical of taking on another volunteer opportunity to say the least. His skepticism lasted as long as it took him to get his first hug and smile from one of the students at Brushy Creek Elementary. We also heard that volunteers were needed on Wednesdays to get snacks ready for distribution and started going to the Backpack House on a regular basis. Now Wednesdays have a permanent spot on our school year calendar. We help with distribution as often as it is our turn. We love seeing the excitement on the children’s faces and getting to know them throughout the school year. Another favorite time for us is the annual Spring Break food drive. Watching the entire community come together to serve our students is a highlight for us. We are blessed beyond measure to be a part of this amazing ministry.
Note from Beth:
Sandi is far too modest! The Rebeceks are nothing short of amazing! (Have you noticed that I use that word a lot? I often say that about our volunteers- we have some truly AMAZING supporters!) If I ask Christine, our Operations Manager, I'm sure she'd agree. Wednesday mornings at the portable would be a lot more complicated and, honestly, far more boring without them. They have a true heart for our mission, and we are blessed to have them as a part of our organization.
